Generator Servicing & Maintenance in Cape Town
A standby generator is only worth having if it starts the moment the power goes, and regular servicing is what makes that happen. Generator ResQ services diesel generators across Cape Town and the Western Cape, with maintenance plans built around how much your generator runs.
How often should a generator be serviced?
As a general rule, standby diesel generators should be serviced every 6 months or after 100 to 200 running hours, whichever comes first. Generators that run often, for example during load-shedding or at sites with an unreliable supply, need servicing more frequently.
What a generator service includes
- Engine oil and oil filter change
- Inspection of the fuel and air filters, with replacement where needed
- Cooling system check, including coolant level and condition, hoses and radiator
- Battery and starter test
- Fuel system inspection for leaks and contamination
- Electrical system and control panel check
- A load test to confirm the generator can carry your building’s load
Preventive maintenance plans
Instead of waiting for something to break, a preventive maintenance plan puts your generator on a regular schedule. We tailor the plan to your unit, how many hours it runs and how critical it is to your home or business. The result is fewer breakdowns, lower repair bills and a longer life for your equipment.
We service diesel generators from all major brands, including Cummins, Perkins, Cat (Caterpillar), Deutz and Onan.
Signs your generator is overdue for a service
- It starts slowly or needs several attempts
- Unusual smoke colour from the exhaust
- Oil or fuel leaks under or around the unit
- More noise or vibration than usual
- Tripping under load
- Warning lights on the control panel
If you’re seeing any of these, the generator may need more than a routine service. See our generator repair page, or read the generator FAQs.
